How often should you get a chemical peel?

It depends on the peel depth, your skin type, and what you’re treating. Here’s how we approach scheduling at Contoured — and why your friend’s monthly cadence may not be right for your face.

The short answer
  • Light peels: every 2–4 weeks. Medium peels: every 3–6 months. Deep peels: once a year at most.
  • The right cadence depends on peel depth, your Fitzpatrick skin type, and your goal — acne, melasma, and anti-aging each follow a different rhythm.
  • Darker skin tones need wider spacing, lower acid strengths, and pre-treatment to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • There’s no universal schedule. Yours is set at a consult, from your skin — not from a price menu.

By depth and recovery time

Light peels (low-percentage glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and the PCA Sensi Peel) can be done every two to four weeks. Recovery is minimal — slight pink-ness for a few hours, no visible flaking. They’re great for maintenance brightening and gentle texture work.

Medium-depth peels (TCA blends, Jessner’s) are spaced every three to six months. Recovery is three to seven days of visible peeling. These are the workhorses for melasma, post-acne hyperpigmentation, and moderate sun damage.

Deep peels are once a year at most. Recovery is two to three weeks of social downtime. We use these rarely and only after careful evaluation — they’re appropriate for deep wrinkles or precancerous changes, but they’re not for everyone.

By what you’re treating

For acne and breakouts

An initial series of four to six light peels spaced two to three weeks apart, then monthly or bi-monthly maintenance. The peels help regulate oil and reduce inflammatory acne lesions over the series.

For melasma and hyperpigmentation

A series of three to four medium-depth peels over six months, paired with strict sun protection between treatments. Melasma is one of the conditions where peels can also worsen the problem if done wrong — gentle, consistent, with the right at-home regimen, or not at all.

For anti-aging and fine lines

Quarterly medium peels for ongoing collagen stimulation. Monthly light peels for surface texture and tone evenness. Together, these create cumulative improvement over a year that no one-off peel ever could.

How your skin’s natural cycle factors in

Cell turnover takes about 28 days in your 20s and stretches to 45 days as you age. The right peel schedule works with this cycle — accelerating turnover when you want results, slowing down to maintain results without irritating the skin.

We start every new peel patient with a full assessment: Fitzpatrick skin type, current home routine, medical history (including isotretinoin use), recent sun exposure, and what you’ve responded to before. The schedule comes from that conversation, not from a pricing menu.

Not sure how often your skin should be peeled?

A free 30-minute consult gives you a peel schedule built around your Fitzpatrick type and your goals — not a generic one.

When to space peels further apart

  • Recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use — wait 6 to 12 months
  • Active cold sore or skin infection
  • Recent surgery or major injectables in the same area
  • Pregnancy or active breastfeeding
  • Severe sunburn — wait until your skin has fully recovered

For darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI), we space treatments further apart, start at lower acid concentrations, and pre-treat with tyrosinase-inhibiting topicals to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What we’d say at your consult

The honest answer: “It depends.” The right peel cadence is yours, not someone else’s. Our job is to assess your skin, listen to what’s bothering you, and write a plan that fits your specific face — without selling you treatments your skin doesn’t need.
