Most patients who come to Contoured for skinpen microneedling have tried at least one other provider. The recurring patterns:

We chose this specific device/protocol because of clinical evidence, predictability, and our clinical team’s deep experience with it. What it actually is
SkinPen Microneedling — in plain language.
Microneedling creates hundreds of microscopic channels in the skin using sterile single-use needle cartridges. The micro-injury triggers a collagen-rebuilding response that lasts months.
We use SkinPen Precision — the ONLY microneedling device FDA-cleared for facial use. The depth is adjustable (0.25mm to 2.5mm) so we can treat surface texture and deeper acne scarring at the same visit.
For acne scarring specifically, microneedling is the best non-laser treatment available. We typically do a series of 4–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with visible improvement after each.
Many practices use unbranded “derma rollers” or knockoff devices — those are not FDA-cleared, can cause more harm than good, and don’t deliver consistent depth. We only use SkinPen.

The things people ask before booking.
Does microneedling hurt?
We numb thoroughly with topical lidocaine for 30 minutes before treatment. Most patients describe sensation as scratchy or vibrating, not painful. The forehead can be more sensitive than the cheeks.
How many sessions will I need?
For general anti-aging and texture: 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. For acne scarring: 4–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Annual maintenance after the initial series.
Will I have downtime?
Yes — 2–3 days of redness similar to mild sunburn, plus some flaking. You can apply mineral makeup at 24 hours. Most patients schedule on a Thursday and are presentable by Monday.
Can I use my retinol after?
Stop retinol 5 days before and resume 5 days after. The active ingredients are too irritating on freshly-treated skin.
Is it safe on darker skin?
Yes — microneedling is one of the safer collagen-stimulating treatments for Fitzpatrick types IV–VI because it doesn’t use light or heat. We modify the depth and protocol but the technique is safe.
What’s the difference between SkinPen and PRP/”vampire facial”?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is your own blood’s growth factors, drawn at the visit and applied during microneedling. We offer it as an add-on. The base microneedling gives 70% of the result; PRP adds another 20%.
