If you’ve seen this before

You’ve seen Laser Hair Removal done badly.

Most patients who come to Contoured for laser hair removal have tried at least one other provider. The recurring patterns:

  • Daily shaving with razor burn that never heals.
  • Monthly waxing that’s expensive and painful.
  • Ingrown hairs along the bikini line that scar.
  • Being told laser isn’t safe for your skin tone (it is, with the right device).

That’s not how we work.

What we use, and why

Multi-wavelength laser (alexandrite + Nd:YAG, FDA-cleared). Conservative dosing. Dr. Lam reviewing every plan.

We use Multi-wavelength laser (alexandrite + Nd:YAG, FDA-cleared). We chose this specific device/protocol because of clinical evidence, predictability, and our clinical team’s deep experience with it. Every plan is reviewed by our Medical Director, Dr. Benjamin Lam, DO — board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical associate professor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What it actually is

Laser Hair Removal — in plain language.

Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair shaft and follicle with a precise wavelength of light. The light energy heats the follicle to the point of permanent damage — without harming the surrounding skin.

Because hair grows in cycles (anagen, catagen, telogen), only the hair currently in the anagen phase is destroyed at each session. That’s why a series of 6–8 sessions is required for permanent results.

We use a dual-wavelength device (alexandrite for lighter skin, Nd:YAG for darker skin) so we can safely treat all Fitzpatrick types. Many laser hair removal practices use only alexandrite, which is unsafe for darker skin tones.

After the initial series, most patients need touch-ups every 1–2 years for any new hair that develops with hormonal changes.

“Permanent. Across every skin type.”

Common questions

The things people ask before booking.

How many sessions will I need?
Most areas: 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for permanent reduction. Hormonally-driven areas (chin, neck) sometimes need ongoing maintenance every 1–2 years.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe it as a series of warm rubber-band snaps. We use a cooling tip throughout. Areas with thicker hair are more sensitive.
Is it safe on darker skin?
Yes — with the right wavelength. We use Nd:YAG (1064 nm) for Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. Alexandrite (755 nm) is unsafe for darker skin and causes hyperpigmentation. We do not use alexandrite on darker skin.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shave only. Do not wax, thread, or epilate between sessions. The laser needs an intact hair follicle to target.
Can I be in the sun?
Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before and after each session. Tanned skin and laser hair removal don’t mix — risk of burns and hyperpigmentation.
Will it work on blond or gray hair?
No — laser hair removal targets pigment in the hair. Blond, red, gray, and white hair don’t have enough pigment to absorb the energy. We’re honest about this at consult — we’ll tell you upfront if you’re not a candidate.
