Dermaplaning in West Chester, PA — the smooth-canvas reset.

Manual exfoliation with a sterile surgical blade that removes the top layer of dead skin AND the fine vellus hair on the face. The result is smoother makeup, brighter skin, and product penetration that actually works.

West Chester patients reach us in under 20 minutes via US-322 — Contoured is the closest medspa with this depth of physician oversight to the West Chester borough, East Goshen, and the Westtown corridor.

Contoured skincare treatment detail, dermaplaning in Chadds Ford, PA
If you’ve seen this before

You’ve seen Dermaplaning done badly.

Most patients who come to Contoured for dermaplaning have tried at least one other provider. The recurring patterns:

  • Foundation that looks cakey, no matter how much primer you use.
  • A “dermaplane” at a regular spa where they used a butter-knife blade and gave you razor burn.
  • The myth that you’ll grow a beard if you do it (you won’t).

That’s not how we work.

What we use, and why

Sterile single-use surgical blade (medical-grade). Conservative dosing. Dr. Lam reviewing every plan.

We use Sterile single-use surgical blade (medical-grade). We chose this specific device/protocol because of clinical evidence, predictability, and our aestheticians’ deep experience with it. Every plan is reviewed by our Medical Director, Dr. Benjamin Lam, DO — board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical associate professor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What it actually is

Dermaplaning — in plain language.

Dermaplaning is a precise manual exfoliation. We use a sterile single-use surgical blade — held at a 45-degree angle — to gently scrape off the outermost layer of dead skin cells and the fine peach-fuzz hair (vellus hair) on the face.

No, it doesn’t make the hair grow back darker or thicker. That’s the most common myth about dermaplaning. Vellus hair has a fixed follicle — it grows back exactly the same. Multiple decades of clinical evidence confirm this.

The result is dramatic: smoother makeup application, brighter-looking skin, and significantly better penetration of your serums and treatments. Many patients call it “the cheapest treatment that makes the biggest visible difference.”

It’s a great add-on to HydraFacial — we dermaplane first, then HydraFacial — but stands alone perfectly as a quick reset.

“The treatment that makes your tinted moisturizer look like skin.”

    Plan

A written long-term plan, with package pricing available if it suits. You decide when to come back.

  3. 03

    Treat

Conservative dosing. Precise technique. Same provider each visit. Every plan reviewed by Dr. Lam.

  4. 04

Common questions

The things people ask before booking.

Does the hair grow back darker?
No. This is the most common myth. Vellus hair (the fine peach fuzz on your face) has a fixed follicle — it grows back exactly the same color and texture. The reason myths persist: most people confuse vellus hair with thicker terminal hair, which behaves differently.
How often should I dermaplane?
Every 3–4 weeks matches the natural skin-cell turnover cycle. Some patients come weekly before an event.
Is it painful?
No. It feels like a careful scraping sensation — most patients describe it as relaxing. There’s no numbing required.
Can I do it at home?
No. Home dermaplaning tools are dull, single-use sterile blades require sharps disposal, and the technique requires training to avoid nicks. We sterilize, prep, and use a fresh blade for every patient.
Will my makeup look different after?
Significantly. Foundation, tinted moisturizer, and powder all sit on freshly-dermaplaned skin like a second skin — not a layer. Most patients say their products look better for 2–3 weeks after.
