If you’ve seen this before

You’ve seen IPL Photofacial done badly.

Most patients who come to Contoured for ipl photofacial have tried at least one other provider. The recurring patterns:

  • A face full of sun spots from your 20s before SPF was non-negotiable.
  • Broken capillaries around the nose that no amount of foundation hides.
  • A “photofacial” elsewhere that was actually a budget device — and you saw no result.
  • Being told nothing can fix sun damage (it can).

That’s not how we work.

What we use, and why

Cutera xeo (FDA-cleared IPL / broadband light). Conservative dosing. Dr. Lam reviewing every plan.

We use the Cutera xeo (FDA-cleared IPL / broadband light). We chose this specific device/protocol because of clinical evidence, predictability, and our clinical team’s deep experience with it. Every plan is reviewed by our Medical Director, Dr. Benjamin Lam, DO — board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical associate professor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What it actually is

IPL Photofacial — in plain language.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light — broadband light delivered in precisely timed pulses. Unlike a laser (single wavelength), IPL covers a range of wavelengths simultaneously, which lets it target multiple pigments at once.

When the light hits a brown spot or broken capillary, the pigment absorbs the energy and heats up rapidly. The spot scabs over and flakes off in 7–10 days. The blood vessel collapses and is reabsorbed.

Our Cutera xeo has multiple filters, which lets us tune the wavelength for what we’re targeting and skip what we’re not.

Most patients need 3–5 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart to clear visible damage. After that, annual maintenance keeps the skin clear and slows new sun-damage accumulation.

“The treatment that makes 50-year-old skin look 35.”

  2. 02

    Plan

A written long-term plan, with package pricing available if it suits. You decide when to come back.

  3. 03

    Treat

Conservative dosing. Precise technique. Same provider each visit. Every plan reviewed by Dr. Lam.

  4. 04

    Track

Photos at follow-up. Notes that travel with you. Year-over-year continuity is the result.

Common questions

The things people ask before booking.

Will my brown spots get darker before they go away?
Yes — that’s how it works. Treated spots darken visibly for 7–10 days, then flake off naturally. Resist picking. The flaking is essential for the result.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients see 70% improvement after 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. For deeper sun damage or extensive freckling, 5 sessions is typical.
Will it work on darker skin?
IPL works best on Fitzpatrick types I–III (lighter skin). For Fitzpatrick types IV–VI, the broadband light can absorb into normal pigment and cause hyperpigmentation. We use a different protocol — Laser Genesis or Q-switched lasers — for darker skin.
Is it painful?
Most patients describe it as a series of warm rubber-band snaps. We cool the skin throughout. No numbing required.
Can I do this in summer?
We strongly prefer fall/winter treatment. IPL requires you to avoid sun for 4 weeks before and after each session. Doable but harder in summer.
